How we spent three weeks in Mexico

cycling in mexico

One thing I didn’t fully understand before planning a trip to Mexico was just how huge this country is. We spent 18 days in Mexico in March-April 2022 and could probably have spent that time exploring Mexico City alone.

Instead, we decided to fit CDMX, Oaxaca, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo all into less than three weeks! It was busy, but well worth it to experience so munch of the country in one go. This was our Mexico travel itinerary.

  • 3 days in Mexico City

  • 3 days in Oaxaca

  • 10 days in the Yucatan Peninsula

It’s hard to express just how much there is to do in Mexico, and especially in these key tourist areas. In fact, when I first wrote it out it came to 25 pages in Google Docs!

So I've broken our trip down into smaller pieces that highlight the most interesting parts of our time in Mexico. Including the must-see attractions that you should make a point to visit during your trip.

How we spent three days in Mexico City

Highlights: the history, the Frida Kahlo museum, the neighbourhoods.

I was not prepared for how huge CDMX is, and just how much there is to do here. But I’m happy with all the activities we crammed into such a short time! From museums to boat trips to eating the best tacos ever. Read the full blog here.

The best places to eat and drink in Mexico City

Highlights: the food and drink in CDMX is such a highlight that it deserved its own blog. From 50p tacos to one of the best bars in the world, we experienced the full spectrum of restaurants in the city.

How we spent three days in Oaxaca

Highlights: the history, the culture, the food and drink.

Oaxaca City is small but charming and busy and vibrant. It's culture and deep-rooted connections with its land and history make it a unique place to visit.

The best places to eat and drink in Oaxaca

Highlights: like CDMX, the food and drink in Oaxaca deserves its own space. It can be hard to get a table in some of the most popular restaurants, but you’ll never be far from a just-as-good alternative.

How we spent 10 days in the Yucatan Peninsula

Highlights: there’s so much to do in the Yucatan region that you’ll have to come to terms with the fact that you’re unlikely to see it all. It's tough at first, but we were happy with everything we chose to do.

How we spent three days in Tulum

Highlights: busy and overwhelmingly faux-boho, I was not Tulum’s biggest fan. But we still managed to take in the atmosphere and enjoy yet more delicious food during our three days in the city.

Isla holbox

How we spent two days in Isla Holbox

Highlights: my favourite place we visited in Mexico. Isla Holbox is what I imagine Tulum was like before the tourist influx (and sadly it seems to be on the same trajectory). But it has still maintained its laid-back tropical island vibe, which was the perfect way to end our trip.

Driving in Mexico: the lowdown

Highlights: the views and the unique experience of driving in Mexico was a definite highlight to what could have otherwise been a stressful experience. So, while driving round Yucatan is worth doing… you have to be prepared! Especially coming from Europe, the rules of the road here seemed very different to home.
