How to take a day trip to Lake Bled from Ljubljana
Lake Bled is one of the easiest and most worthwhile day trips from Ljubljana. It’s close enough that you can visit in half a day if you’re short on time, but beautiful enough that you could easily spend much longer there. We kept our trip short as we only had two days in Slovenia, and caught an early bus from Ljubljana, walked around the lake with a quick viewpoint climb, then were back in the city by early afternoon.
How to get to Lake Bled from Ljubljana
The easiest way to get to Lake Bled from Ljubljana is by bus. We caught the bus from Ljubljana’s main bus terminal at 8:30am, which got us to Bled at around 9:30–9:45am.
Tickets cost €6.50 each way, so €13 return, and you’ll need to pay in cash. The bus drops you very close to the lake, so once you arrive, you can start exploring straight away without needing another transfer.
If you'd prefer something more organised, there are plenty of tours that offer day trips to the Lake, but you will probably pay more and have to go at the pace of your group.
How long does it take to get to Lake Bled from Ljubljana?
The journey from Ljubljana to Lake Bled takes just under an hour, depending on traffic and the bus service you take.
It’s close enough that you don’t need to commit to a full-day tour if you don’t want to. We were back in Ljubljana by around 1:30pm, which made it a very easy half-day trip.
What is there to do at Lake Bled?
The main thing to do at Lake Bled is simply walk around the lake. The full loop is easy, scenic, and not challenging at all if you stick to the path around the water.
There are also plenty of other activities if you want to make more of a day of it. You can take a boat out to Bled Island, visit Bled Castle, swim in warmer months, or stop for the famous Bled cream cake.
We kept it relaxed and didn’t do any of the paid activities, but it still felt completely worth the trip.
Walking around Lake Bled
The walk around Lake Bled took us about two hours, including a small climb up to the Ojstrica viewpoint.
The Ojstrica viewpoint path is easy to miss, so I’d recommend following maps rather than relying on signs. The climb itself is short, but it gives you a beautiful view over the lake, island, and mountains, so it’s worth adding if you’re comfortable with a bit of uphill walking.
If you stick to the flat loop around the lake, it’s a very gentle walk and suitable for most people.
Can you visit Lake Bled in half a day?
Yes, you can easily visit Lake Bled from Ljubljana in half a day.
We left Ljubljana at 8:30am, walked around the lake, climbed to Ojstrica viewpoint, and were back in the city by 1:30pm. If you’re short on time, this is more than enough to see the lake and enjoy the views.
That said, a full day would definitely feel more relaxed if you want to visit Bled Castle, take a boat to the island, go swimming, or stop for lunch. If you're into activities I’d give yourself longer. But we didn't feel stressed or short on time with our itinerary.
Is Lake Bled worth visiting?
Yes, Lake Bled is absolutely worth visiting. It’s popular for a reason, but it still felt calm, relaxed, and easy to enjoy. The lake is beautiful, the walk is simple, and the whole trip is very straightforward from Ljubljana. I've read reviews that say it's packed in mid-summer, but in May it was fairly quiet and our bus wasn't even full!
If you only have a couple of days in Slovenia, I’d still make time for this day trip.
